Dignity Amid Devastation
This painting was created days after the earthquake and tsunami in Northern Japan. I was overcome by the myriad of images on the computer and television. These were profound images of tragic loss and complete devastation. The enormous powerful wave and its fury in the moment it struck.
The other remarkable thing that was taking place was the respectful behavior of the Japanese people. There were images of tatami mats carefully arranged where surviving people were quietly taking shelter. Concerned about the others that were about to arrive and reverently grieving for those that were lost.
The painting was a way for me to process this tragedy. The circle needed to become an orb of energy and light showing the inner strength and dignity of each individual.
